Everything 20th century American artist Andy Warhol did was groundbreaking, from op-art painting to photography, and cinema to video. And now, Lisbon’s renowned Berardo Museum showcases Warhol’s foray into television with an exhibition currently running through 14 November 2010.
Few people are aware of Warhol’s interest in television. From 1979 to 1987, the artist’s fascination with beauty, celebrity and fame, resulted in several TV series. The first program was “Andy Warhol’s Fashion” airing on a local cable channel in New York City. This program featured short interviews with prominent style icons, artists, designers and models such as:
Steven Spielberg, John Waters, Duran Duran, Cindy Sherman, Larry Rivers, Bill Coppely, Keith Haring, Pee Wee Herman, Paloma Picasso, Issey Miyake, Debbie Harry, Divine, Sting, Georgia O’Keeffe
Warhol followed these with “Andy Warhol TV” on Madison Square Garden cable channel, and later “Andy Warhol’s 15 Minutes” on MTV.
