Corte-Real Gallery – A Haven for Art in Paderne

Art galleries generally have a reputation for being minimalistic spaces, in high-traffic urban areas, frequented by bohemian art groupies and upper-end snooty collectors.  Corte-Real Gallery in Paderne is the complete antithesis of that stereotype.

Off the beaten path, Corte-Real is worth your short dive north of Boliqueime in the central Algarve.  In fact, it makes an excellent day trip away from the crowds at the beaches and marinas.  To get there, you’ll have to maneuver through old village roads, park on dirt path and walk half a block to the hillside facility.

The complex is actually an old farm.  The galleries consist of a refurbished stone farm house and stables.  An adjoining patio has café tables and chairs to enjoy refreshments al fresco.  Massive gardens spread out across the rolling hills.  Sculpture art is intermingled with the vegetation.  A level down is a full-sized swimming pool, where you can sit on the side and soak your feet.  And, just above that is a gallery annex for special exhibitions.

Inside the gallery buildings, the old stone walls are an ideal backdrop for modern and contemporary art.  The owners source artists themselves.  Some are local, but most are found in  locations as far as South Africa, England and the United States.  The art is beautifully executed, and some would say, reasonably priced.  The collection typically ranges from landscapes and realism, to abstract and surreal.  Truly, something for everyone.

Corte-Real has home products too, such as hand-painted ceramics from artisans in the village of Porches, decorative lamps, chandeliers and picture frames, even locally made olive oils.  A nice selection of regional books and cookbooks are also available.

Looking for an escape from the beach?  Drive to Corte-Real, for something different:  artistic expression, coffee or wine on the patio, a garden walk, and fresh air all mixed into one pleasant package.  And, you might find yourself in the mood for acquiring an artistic souvenir for your collection!
