Everything Cool in Portugal
MODALISBOA Fashion Week keeps getting bigger and better. Day 3 mixed in menswear and introduced promising new designers.
This is inspired by Nuno Gama’s recent travels to the Middle East. The masculinity of men working the sea, from fishing to navigation, influences his designs. The stars of the collection are pants in playful opposition of volume, full in some areas and leaner in others, offering “intoxicating sensuality” of the sea-faring man. Pure cotton or synthetic memory blends, and some wool, is the material of choice. For night, fabrics include silk and new materials of synthetic and rubber. Colors of the sea and sky are blended with beige, and the always appreciated black and white.
Faith and spirituality are the motivations of new designer Ricard Andrez. These vague yet vast terms are used to express new perspectives and the possibility for change. Therefore, large billowing pieces are juxtaposed with leaner items. Synthetics are mixed with cottons to create interesting textures from large mesh to lean-cut jackets. Various shades of blues and grays are punctuated with burgundy.
Spring/Summer 2011 is a continuation of Aleksander Protic’s Autumn winter 2010 collection which is largely inspired by the life and work of artist Georgia O’Keeffe. Particularly, the artist’s focus on painting flowers in evident in the twisting and knotting of material to create an illusion of flora. Linens, silk georgette and leather are utilized is shades of gray, black and navy.
The hustle and bustle, and warmth richness of a Middle Eastern bazaar is the starting point for this collection. This results in contrasts between traditional silhouettes and elements of modern design, and between patterns and colors. Color choice is black and white, with shades of blue, red, gray and mint green. Blends of cotton/linen/viscose, silk, nylon, cotton twill/ spandex, cotton poplin are used in addition to leather, recycled fabrics and hand-made ikat silk. Dinis complements his collection with sunglasses in water buffalo horn and rosewood, cotton twill bags and Turkish moccasins.
For Spring/Summer 2011, Adidas Originals presents three new collections to meet the diverse needs of the style-conscience streetwear community. Originals Denim consists of two styles of jeans for men and women in various washes. A new concept in footwear, MEGA, incorporates Adidas technology for sports shoes into streetwear designs, such as hi-tops and lo-tops, in a variety of colors and styles. And, building on the success of their skateboarding line, Adidas Originals ST is young, fun, expressive offering a collection of footwear, apparel and accessories, in bold colors and vivid images.
Lidija Kolovrat presents her thoughts on gravity, as if falling from a 79-story building. A “free fall” creates wobble and unexpected movement. Playing with pixel scale transforms the image of distance. The silhouette of the collection appears shaped by a classic lines but these fold and melt continuously. Black, white, and metallic colors prevail in silks, cottons, leather and new technology fabrics.
Nature dominating urban life is the theme behind Katty Xiomara’s collection. The green forest, filled with life and passion in conflict with the cubist, imperfect gray city-life makes for fun and exhilarating perspectives. Besides a mix of colors, asymmetries include geometric designs and floral patterns, organic textures and light structured fabrics (like that of a city building). Color palette is equally striking with forest green and vivid blue, neutral white and red hibiscus.
This collection speaks to questions of identity, especially how we see ourselves and how others perceive us. Form and color are explored in a broad sense, as if each silhouette had a character or visual appearance of a logo. Therefore, geometric shapes are refined. Overlapping panels create multiple layers. Volume usually applied in the front can move to the back. Soft colors mix with bold, such as salmon, coral, white, pale green and pale yellow with blue, black, green, red, orange and turquoise. Fabrics utilized are cotton, satin, silk, linen, cotton jerseys with silk, and waxed cotton.
In this collection dubbed “The Game,” Miguel Vieira conveys the duality of the seductive, mysterious man with that of the sexy, irresistible woman. Silhouettes representing this theme are masculine structure and feminine hourglass. The color palette is black, white, midnight blue, and green. A wide variety of fabrics bring this collection to life with a heavy use of texture: hand embroidery, lace, sequins, lycra, pure wool, satin, tulle, hosiery and leather.
