Everything Cool in Portugal
Spending some time in the Bairro Alto this evening? Before you join the crowds in the calçada streets of door-to-door bars, consider a pleasant dining experience in the quieter part of the neighborhood. Restaurante 560, on Rua das Gáveas, is just a few steps away from Praça Camões, and a great way to start your night of socializing.
Let’s start with the clever name. 560 is not the building number. Rather, it is the international barcode number assigned to products made in Portugal. This is an apt for description for what you can expect from Restaurant 560: modern Portuguese cuisine in a minimal but cozy atmosphere.
From the street of the old neighborhood, the restaurant looks strangely out of place. It is a contemporary pocket protruding from traditional architecture. Inside, the walls, floors and ceiling are covered in wood. The rooms seem to glow, yet the only light comes from small square cutouts in the walls. Near the rear, the change in materials to black Portuguese tile, designates where the kitchen and service areas are located.

And true to its name, the products served here are purely Portuguese. Although, like the décor, expect a contemporary twist to the traditional dishes. A sampling of the menu includes:
Wild mushroom toast with Ilha cheese
Filo pastry with black pork sausage
Octopus carpaccio
Partridge pie with lemon rice and green salad
Rosemary and honey crusted lamb with vegetable couscous
Filet mignon with wild mushroom cream sauce
Black spaghetti with grilled prawn and cuttlefish
Cod fish with roasted cornbread, potatoes and sprouts
Pineapple carpaccio with cilantro sauce
Cream pudding with strawberry coulis
At the end, after dessert, port and a coffee, you will also be happy to see your bill is very moderately priced. For more information, visit the Restaurante 560 website.
