Everything Cool in Portugal
Most of us take comic illustrations for granted! Sure we chuckle when glancing at comic strips in newspapers, or become enthralled in a superhero comic book. Yet, how often do we realize that each individual window of drawing is actually a work of art? The Berardo Collection Museum in Lisbon appreciates this unique form of expression, and is curating an entire exhibition devoted to cartoon artwork by Portuguese artists.
The show entitled Tinta nos Nervos (Ink Nerves) opens 10 January and runs through 27 March. The exhibition features 600 works by 41 Portuguese artists from different generations. The purpose of the exhibition is to explore the broad perspective of Portuguese comics. In doing so, the museum hopes to win over new audiences who appreciate comic art as an alternative form of creativity and communication.

The comic book market in Portugal is not exactly strong or very diverse. This exhibition features some artists who have enjoyed commercial and critical success. And, it also takes a look at artists who appear to obey conventional rules of print, but whose themes are disruptive, and some others who push the limits in all respects. In some cases, artists utilize materials other than paper, such as animation, sculptures, dolls, models and “object-zines,” to communicate their message.
Artists with work featured in the exhibition include:
Geirinhas Alice, Anna Courtier, André Lemos, Antonio Jorge Goncalves, Bruno Borges, Carlos Botelho, Carlos Pinheiro, Carlos Zingaro, Cátia Serrão, Daniel Lima, Conefrey Diniz, Eduardo Batarda, Filipe Abranches, Isabel Baraona, Isabel Carvalho, Isabel Lobinho, Janus John Farm, John May Pinto, José Carlos Fernandes, Jucifer (Joana Figueiredo), Luis Henriques, Marco Mendes, Mark Farrajota Mary John Worm, Mauro Cerqueira, Miguel Carneiro, Miguel Rocha, Nuno Saraiva, Nuno Sousa, Paulo Monteiro, Pedro Burgos, Pedro Nora, Peter Zamith, Pepedelrey, Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro, Richard Câmara, Susa Monteiro, Teresa Câmara Pestana, James Manuel and Victor Mesquita.
