Mappa Mundi – Museum Berardo, 31 January–25 April 2011

Mappa Mundi is a Latin term used in medieval times to describe European maps of the world. In 2011, the Berardo Collection Museum in Lisbon, re-invents the term to characterize a unique exhibition of contemporary art inspired by geographical maps.

In fact, many works on display use use Old World maps as source materials for modern day expression. Take for instance Adriana Varejão’s tribute to 16^th century Portuguese cartographer Lopo Homen. Varejão depicts difficulties in the world by adding a large three-dimensional wound in the center of a Lopo Homen map. Lacerations on the work are stitched up, and small “blood droplets” form red islets around the continents.

Other works in the exhibition are more whimsical. Look for items that are sculpted, quilted and pieced together in collages. As well, look for a full length dress made of map prints by the design group of De Geuzen.
