Cervejaria da Esquina – Vitor Sobral Creates a Corner Brewery

Popular chef Vitor Sobral makes it look so easy. He takes basic Portuguese concepts of dining, and transforms them into contemporary (and delicious) experiences. His latest project, Cervejaria da Esquina (Corner Brewery), redefines the classic Portuguese beer establishment of times past, with a hip and modern restaurant for the 21st century.

Cevejaria da Esquina is located at Rua Correia Teles, 56, in Campo de Ourique, not too far from Tasca da Esquina (Sobral’s homage to the Portuguese tavern). Everything about the restaurant radiates freshness. Tones of white, beige and brown prevail. Minimalistic wall décor allows the focal point of the rooms to be the glass tanks filled with live crab and other shellfish. A large picture window offers views to the busy kitchen. Paper placemat menus greet guests at simple wood tables.

Shellfish reigns supreme at Cervejaria da Esquina. The menu will always depend on what’s fresh at the market on that day, however, you can expect a wide selection of crab, lobster, crawfish, shrimp, clams, oysters and whelks. With such rich delicacies, Sobral is careful not to be overly-innovative. So the dishes are light and fresh, playing to the full flavor of the shellfish. So, the menu offers shrimp salad, clams with sautéed onion with ginger and lemon, lobster and green bean or lobster with roe. For those who must have fish, Sobral will always offer a couple fresh selections, such as tuna steak or spike bull.

Sobral works his magic on traditional Portuguese dishes as well. Lusophiles will be happy to see a selection of açordas, cataplanas, steaks, sausages, rice, pastas and curries.

Of course, what would a cervejaria be without beer? Here, Sobral offers what he calls “esquininhas.” These are smaller-than-normal glasses of cold, fresh beer meant to be sipped quickly. They perfectly complement the meal as well as complete theme.

Cervejaria da Esquina is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday.
