The World Series events are important training events for the teams planning to race for the America’s Cup. With the switch to cutting-edge, multi-hulls, powered by towering wingsails, these events are extremely beneficial for the sailors. The Cascais regatta will feature both fleet and match racing.
In the words of America’s Cup Event Authority Chairman Richard Worth, “Cascais provides us with the perfect setting to initiate the AC World Series and begin this new series in style. It was our goal to select AC World Series venues that provide an exceptional experience for both our teams and our fans, and Cascais delivers on that promise.”
Currently 9 teams have been vetted and accepted to compete: Aleph Equipe de France (France), Artemis Racing (Sweden), China Team (China), Emirates Team New Zealand (New Zealand), Energy Team (France), Venezia Challenge (Italy), Oracle Racing (USA), Team Korea (Korea), and one undisclosed team.
The event will be televised to expose millions more fans to the sport of high-performance sailing. At the end of the AC World Series season, a champion will be crowned.
Following Cascais, America’s Cup World Series events will be held in Plymouth, England and San Diego, California. The 34th America’s Cup, held every four years, will be hosted by San Francisco in September 2013.
