Everything Cool in Portugal
84 films from around the world have been selected to screen at the 15th edition of Queer Lisboa. This film festival in Portugal’s premiere showcase for the best of queer cinema produced in the past two years. The Cinema São Jorge and Teatro do Bairro will play hosts to this unique and respected event taking place in Lisbon, September 16-24.

Transgressions is the theme of this year’s festival dedicated exclusively to screening gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and transsexual themed films, a genre known as Queer Cinema. With that, expect to see a very diverse, thought-provoking works alongside a schedule of events featuring theatrical play, art exhibitions and director discussions.
Significant films, not only for this genre, but critically acclaimed by the film community will screen. Opening the festival will be Howl, by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, and starring James Franco. The film will go into wide release in Portugal on 22 September, distributed by Midas Filmes. The Closing Night film is Taxi Zum Klo, by Frank Ripploh, a work transgressing both cinema narrative and aesthetic values, regarding sex, sexuality, and gender.
Also screening is a documentary generating much discussion in the US, Becoming Chaz. This film documents the transgender female-to-male process of Chaz Bono (see photo at top).
Special guests at this year’s festival includes: Swiss director Sylvie Cachin, presenting her documentary gODDESSES (we believe we were born perfect); American director Todd Verow, presenting The Final Girl and Leave Blank; Swedish director Håkon Liu in attendance for Miss Kicki; Greek director Panagiotis Evangelidis will talk about his documentary The Life and Death of Celso Junior, and his experimental short film Diptych: The love that dare not speak its name; director Hong Khaou, screening his short film Spring, and Pedro Barão presenting short film Vibratum Vitae.

There is a competition element ot the festival. Awards will be given to Best Feature Film, Best Actor and Best Actress. As well, The RTP2 Award will be given to Best Documentary. The most popular short film will be given the Audience Award.
