In the heart of the hip and happening Chiado district of Lisbon is a fun and fashionable restaurant by one of Portugal’s coolest and chicest celebrities, Fatima Lopes. Lopes, known as a fashion designer extraordinaire, is also a savvy business woman with interests in restaurants nightclubs and even a modeling agency. So, no doubt, her Faces in Chiado restaurant is a central meeting point for Lisbon’s sophisticates seeking haute cuisine and trendy ambiance.
Using her design sense, artistic creativity and keen sense for business, Lopes is responsible for the creative direction of every element from dining furniture and lighting, to tablecloths and dinnerware. Even staff uniforms have the designed to Lopes’ specifications. The result is a clean, contemporary and über-cool space, primarily in black and white, ideal for romantic dining or group entertaining.
Like the décor, the cuisine is contemporary. Portuguese favorites are transformed into modern works of art by Chef João Simões. His experience includes stints in the kitchens of popular Bica do Sapato, the Hotel Four Seasons Provence and the Altis Belem Hotel. His talents were honored in 2006 by being named World champion of Haute Cuisine.
A sneak peek of the Faces in Chiado menu reveals:
■ Veal carpaccio with mustard vinaigrette, parmesan shavings, rocket and hazelnuts
■ Octopus carpaccio with olive ravioli, grilled octopus on toast, and mixed salad with coriander
■ Baked goat cheese on toasted bread, thyme lemon honey, pear, port wine and lettuce with balsamic
■ Langostino in butter, with creamy cauliflower and truffles, with crunchy peanuts
■ Champagne and arugula risotto with scallops
■ Duck confit with mashed potatoes, sausage and parsley, and grilled zucchini
■ Beef tenderloin, vegetable terrine, crispy potato with scrambled egg and truffle foam
■ Monkfish with shrimp rice, tomatoes and coriander
■ Codfish pieces on toast, with onions and pennyroyal with onions, poached egg and broth
■ Grilled grouper with sautéed vegetables, cream of potato and arugula
■ Baked pregado with creamy shrimp, garlic & coriander açorda, and tomato, radishes and balsamic salad
■ Banana parfait with orange gelatin, Maria cookie ice cream and orange salad and yogurt
■ Coffee crème brulee with vanilla ice cream and crunchy almonds
A six-course “Pret-a-Porter” degustation menu is also available for €25, consisting of amuse bouche, starter, fish, sorbet, meat and dessert plates.
The evening doesn’t end after the coffee is poured. Faces in Chiado has an active bar scene. Always the entertainer, Lopes has designed a trendy and comfortable area for cocktails and conversation at the bar.
