Gisela Matthjis is synonymous with elegant dining in the central Algarve. After all, her company Fine Dining in Style has been serving personalized haute cuisine to private residences in the Golden Triangle for 15 years. So, we are thrilled to know that the Queen of Cuisine has decided to fulfill a dream and open a restaurant on the Praça in Vale do Lobo. Now we all get to enjoy the fine food, excellent service and overall delight that is Gisela.

Gisela’s sits at the entrance of the Praça. A curved ramp lures guests up to the contemporary restaurant perched above the popular entertainment center. Inside, the modern dining room seats 40 comfortably. Fuchsia, aqua and white décor is art deco chic, mixed with South Beach attitude, and sprinkled with Vale do Lobo glamour. Large picture windows provide amazing views of the ocean. Outside, Gisela’s enjoys the benefit of additional seating on a large terrace for dining under the stars with a fresh sea breeze.
In the kitchen, Gisela has appointed Philipp Glas de Sousa as Head Chef. Glas de Sousa is a superstar from the Fine Dining in Style team. And speaking of stars, Glas de Sousa worked many years as Sous Chef at the Michelin star restaurant Amadeus. So, with Gisela’s inspiration and Glas de Sousa’s execution, the result will surely be gastronomic satisfaction. Some highlights from the menu include:
Starters
■ Carpaccio of cured salmon with fennel mousse & orange vinaigrette
■ Calvados flambéed quail with red lentil salad & caramelized apples
■ Tartar of beef in smoked potato soup & caviar
Entrees
■ Fried scallops with celeriac cream, pear ragout & fresh sorrel
■ Poached lobster on sweet potato mousseline & lemon grass foam price on request
■ Homemade ricotta ravioli with sundried tomatoes, sage butter & cheese from the Azores
Main Courses
■ Rack and shoulder of Alentejo lamb with rocket polenta & grilled vegetables
■ Monkfish in chourizo and red pepper broth & potato gnocchi
■ Seared fillet of corvina with parsley risotto & mussel ragout
■ Fillet of beef with sautéed onions, baked artichokes & potato garlic purée
Desserts
■ Cannelloni with ricotta filling served in chilled strawberry soup & lemon sorbet
■ Passion fruit iced parfait with mango ragout
■ Chocolate nougat torte with poached port wine pear & hazelnut crunch
Dinner for two with starter, main course, dessert, coffee and bottle of wine will be about €120-150.
At lunchtime, Gisela’s is also a great place to bring clients for a power lunch, or to invite friends for some light gossip. Gisela offers a special menu for daytime, including Thai salad with prawns, beef fillet slices with rocket salad, pine nuts & parmesan shavings; and, chicken satay served with Nasi goreng Indonesian rice. Lunch plates range from €10-22.
The terrace at Gigela’s is a magnet for those craving cocktails al fresco. The wood deck with ambient lighting and fire heaters makes the ocean views that much more romantic. Comfy pillows tossed around on sofas means you’re going to get comfortable very easily, and you might just end up spending the entire evening here.
