Couleur France – Contemporary Design, International Cuisine in Almancil
Many central Algarvians consider Couleur France a well kept secret. Perhaps it’s because it’s located slightly off the beaten path, in a quiet location on the west side of Almancil. Drive around that round-about slowly. Look for the Couleur France sign. Take the exit, and enter the grounds of this large contemporary restaurant, bar and lounge. You’ll be glad you found it, and you’ll probably want to stay for the rest of the day.

Couleur France is minimalist in design but expansive in space. All of the areas of the restaurant are wide open, taking advantage of the surrounding landscape and clear Algarvian skies. On the terrace approaching the entrance, a large comfortable lounge area is set up for cool afternoon refreshments or evening cocktails. Inside, a cozy dining area is available for more intimate meals, and a larger room area provides open views to the garden beyond. On warm nights, terrace seating is available outside.
As you might expect, the cuisine at Couleur France is French-inspired, but with a healthy dose of Mediterranean and international influences. Chef José Lourenço has dedicated his entire career to gastronomy. And, the results of this vast experience can be found on each dish served at the table. Some highlights from the menu include:
Starters
■ Gratinated salmon with fresh herbs, olive purée and basil oil dressing
■ Spicy fish cake with Thai salad, sesame oil dressing and sweet chili dip
■ Truffle scented wild mushroom risotto and parmesan shavings
■ Sautéed escalope of foie gras with figs and mango, moscatel sauce, homemade brioche
Mains
■ Fillet of sole and salmon rolled and cooked in a champagne sauce with spinach lasagna
■ Thai prawn and mango curry, wild rice and grilled vegetables
■ Roasted quail with rosemary served with brased cabbage and dried figs
■ Grilled medallions of beef with a foie gras terrine, linguini al tartufo and madeira sauce
Desserts
■ Apple and blueberry crumble with crème anglaise and cream ice cream
■ Crispy banana and ginger parcel with green tea sorbet
■ Raspberry creme brulée with vanilla ice cream
■ Black & white chocolate symphony
Chef Lourenço also offers a special five course meal for €34.95. This includes an appetizer, starter, sorbet, main course and dessert.
After dinner, stick around. The lounge outside is perfect for a nightcap and conversation under the stars. Or, grab a stool at the bar inside and chat with your buddies.
