Summer nights in Coimbra are filled with the sounds of classical music. And, during the days, art exhibitions, cooking classes, historical lectures and interesting conferences can be found around the city. Festival das Artes is a celebration of culture for people of all ages. This year’s event runs from 13 to 29 July.

For 2012, the theme of this year’s festival is “Travels”. According to Festival Chairman José Miguel Judice, the theme, in part, is motivated by the 440-year-old literary work of Luís Camões “Os Lusíadas.” The festival is based primarily in the Gardens at the Hotel Quinta das Lágrimas, but many events take place in cultural venues around the city.
