Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso is one of in a rather significant list of Portuguese modern artists. Returning from World War I in 1916, he organized a series of exhibitions of his avante-garde works in Lisbon and Porto. The images were considered scandalous and prompted discussion on their merit. The Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporênea in Chiado showcases examines this artist’s works in Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, Porto Lisboa, 2016-1916. The show runs through 26 February 2017.

What may have generated the most violent reactions? What was written in the newspapers at the time? What kind of discussions about avant-garde painting did the exhibition stimulate? These are some of the fundamental questions answered in the exhibition.
