Every world-class city has one—a shopping area who’s name alone is recognized for haute couture, high-end jeans and fine fragrances.  Rodeo Drive.  Fifth Avenue.  Mayfair. Champs-Elysees.  Ginza. Lisbon’s Avenida da Liberdade certainly deserves to join the list.

Constructed in 1879, Avenida da Liberdade is modeled after boulevards in Paris.  It is 90 meters wide with ten lanes of traffic, divided by pedestrian walkways decorated with gardens.   It is a main artery for the city linking Praça Marquês de Pombal with the Lisbon’s central district.  The boulevard is home to fashionable mansions, hotels, theatres, cafés…and in recent years designer boutiques.
