A fine Douro wine is multidimensional. Its ultimate essence is a result of many contributing factors, such as quality ingredients, the perfect amount of aging, expert craftsmanship and vintner creativity. The same can be said for a fine film. Douro film enthusiasts appreciate the similarity of these two art forms. So they’ve applied the region’s successful formula for producing amazing wine into creating a robust and elegant film event. The result? One of Portugal’s most respected festival events: the Douro Film Harvest.

From 5-11 September, Douro Film Harvest will showcase what they consider to be a special selection of delectable films. Tributes, parties, live music and, of course, wine, also fill the seven day schedule. Screenings primarily take place in the Teatro Auditório Municipal de Alijó, but look for events throughout the region including the Hotel Vidago Palace, Hotel Casino Chaves and Adega Cooperativa de Favaios. Special outdoor screenings are planned at Praia do Pinhão.

To enhance the cinematic tasting experience, film programs are labeled in several varieties. The Ruby Selection pays tribute to films from a major wine-producing country. This year’s territory is Brazil. The LBV Section honors filmmakers whose oeuvre have been universally recognized with the passage of time. For 2011, the honor goes to Manoel de Oliveira. Lifetime achievement in film is the focus of the Tawny Tribute, and no one better to receive this honor than Brazilian director Carlos (Cacá) Diegues. A few films have been standouts in the festival circuit this year. The Vintage Selection screens four, with Turismo de Douro providing an award to the best.

Manoel de Oliveira receives a retrospective, and Carlos Diegues is honored with a tribute.

The Portuguese film The Death of Carlos Gardel, directed by Swede Solveig Nordlund opens the festival. It is produced by Portugal’s Luis Galvao Teles, from the 1994 novel.

Also on the schedule are two critically-acclaimed and highly-sought-after films of 2011: Terrance Malik’s Tree of Life (starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn) and Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris (with Own Wilson, Rachel McAdams and Marion Cotillard).
