Animals have taken over the world! Dogs are walking people. Donkeys are carried in carts pulled by humans. And, meerkats are rockstars. Welcome to Animaland, the theme for Fiesa 2011 Sand Sculpture Festival in the Algarve through 15 October.
Every summer, cultural events organization Prosandart creates a fantasy world using nothing but sand. In an exhibition area of 15,000 square meters, 40 artists transform 35,000 tons of sand into three-dimensional imagery delighting visitors of all ages.
The theme for Fiesa is different every year. For 2011, the team creates a world where animals laugh at humans, run our cities and mock our typical behaviors. The sand animals enjoy themselves by playing music, dancing, painting reading, writing, eating…and even tipping back a few cocktails. One area of the exhibition space is devoted to beloved animal characters from fiction, animation and movies.
Fiesa is open throughout the day and is a perfect diversion to enjoy under the Algarve sun. However, the exhibition is open at night as well, and offers a completely different perspective. The sculptures are illuminated; so colored lighting and the shadows it casts offers a new dimension entirely. As well, every day between 10 June to 14 September, from 21:00 to 23:00, visitors can see a video projection of the “making of” Fiesa 2011.
