Hiking to Lagoa do Fogo on São Miguel Island in the Azores

The Lagoa do Fogo (Lagoon of Fire) is one of the most beautiful lakes on São Miguel island. Located in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores, this crater lake within the volcanic complex of Agua de Pau Massif is also a protected nature reserve.

During your climb you will access farming lands and pastures and a wood of Japanese Cedar until you arrive to an irrigation channel (Levada). Endemic flora abounds here as do a colony of seagulls on the lake bank. Your return takes advantage of the magnificent view over the South Coast of the island with the Islet of Vila Franca.

Your full-day hike accompanied by our English-speaking local guide includes transportation in a luxury Mercedes Viano together with a packed lunch. This linear hike until the banks of Lagoa do Fogo is of medium difficulty and approximately 11 km. Expect this to take between 4-5 hours.

For the most unique travel experiences and cultural activities to do in the Azores, look no further.
