Smack dab in the center of Porto’s historic district, arts neighborhood and trendy bars, is this gem, the Hotel Infante Sagres. But don’t just take Portugal Confidential’s word for it; just check the guest list. This stylish and luxurious hotel has been visited by the Dalai Lama, royal families of England, Belgium, and Norway, numerous European presidents and long list of billionaires and entertainment celebrities. The excellent location, discreet luxury, style and charm are no doubt the allure of distinguished clientele.
Stepping inside is like entering a plush legendary European palace from the 19th century. Yet, upon closer inspection, extraordinary abstract paintings and modern decorations accent the grand décor. This building was actually built in 1951 by a wealthy textile manufacturer as a retreat for clients of firm. It later evolved into an exclusive meeting place for the wine barons and textile executives of the region. And finally, in the new millennium, the space has been transformed into a boutique hotel that is both contemporary and luxurious.
With an emphasis on comfort, rooms and suites are a melding of original antiquities, modern art and customized furniture. Décor is dignified with high ceilings, substantial furnishings and marble-covered bathrooms.
Boca do Lobo, the elegant restaurant, is supervised by Chef Albano Lourenço (who has already earned one Michelin star Hotel Quinta das Lágrimas). The spotlight here is on local ingredients and flavor in dishes ranging from salmon carpaccio and grilled octopus lasagna, to Portuguese-style ribeye steak and little coquelet chicken with rosemary. Of course, due to its location, Boca do Lobo has a very extensive selection of Douro and Port wines. Meals are served in the lush dining room, or spend the evening al fresco on the patio.
If you can pull yourself away from your room, step into the Angkor Wat Spa. This modern facility utilizes traditional Asian methods to revitalize and relax your mind and body. The menu of treatments includes ayurvedic, full body and shiatsu massages, reflexology, hot stones massage, as well as non-traditional Tibetan bowls therapy and mystic massage.
