luza algarve international light festival

A fantastical festival of light comes to Loulé at the end of November. This unique three-day event, the first of its kind in the Algarve, brings together light artists from around the world to form a spectacle of illumination. Conceived by Loulé-based lighting designer Beau McClellan, in association with Porto-based Inventor’s Lab, the Luza Festival will include large scale light installations, interactive light displays and a conference. Luza Algarve International Festival of Light runs from 24-26 November in locations around Loulé.

McClellan has curated a program of art installations that are sure to amuse and amaze. His own ByBeau Dimple installation features over 600 suspended lights in a mirrored room and synchronized to music. A ringed chandelier hung inside the Teatro Municio de Loulé slowly gyrates while emanating light. A labyrinth of doorways light up depending on the direction and decisions of a participant will, surely, be a show to enjoy.  And, a video mapping show will be projected on the historic Loulé Market every 45 minutes, beginning at 19:00.

One highlight of the festival will, no doubt, be the lighting of the Loulé Municipal Christmas tree, at midnight on Friday the 24th.

On Saturday evening, you won’t want to miss the Torch Light Parade. Everyone is invited to join in. Just arrive at the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Mãe Soberana) around 18:30. Actual fire torches are available for purchase at a nominal fee. (Proceeds from the sales of torches will go to a local charity to be announced.) The Parade route will meander to the center of the city. It should be a beautiful event for those marching in the procession, as well as those viewing from the sidelines.
