It’s probably the most highly-anticipated cultural event in Portugal this year…the long awaited, Grand Opening of MAAT, the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in Lisbon. The opening celebration is set for Wednesday, 5 October with a 12-hour program of performances, concerts and educational activities. The public is invited to participate, beginning at 12:00 and running through 24:00.

With 7000m2 of public space, the new MAAT will be the home of the art collection of the Fundação EDP. The contemporary design is by British architect Amanda Levante of AL_A. According to the architect’s website, “The topographic form blends structure into landscape in a move that creates visual and physical permeability between inside and outside. A space to be appropriated by the public, it allows people to walk over and under as well as through the Centre, and access the city via a new footbridge over the railway tracks. The roof becomes an outdoor room, a physical and conceptual connection to the city’s heart, where you can turn away from the river and enjoy the vista of the cityscape, and at night, watch a film with Lisbon as your backdrop.”

The first three shows planned at MAAT feature: Pynchon Park, a large-format created by the French artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster specifically for the main room of the new building; The World of Charles and Ray Eames, which deals with the life and work of two of the most influential architects of the twentieth century; Form and Shape, one of the central exhibition of the 4th Triennial of Lisbon Architecture.
