As a part of its quarterly cycle of “invited works”, the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, in Lisbon, presents Sagrada Família com Santa Ana (The Holy Family with St. Anne, circa 1590-1595), by Doménico Theotocópuli aka “El Greco”. This is an on-going effort by the museum to present works of great masters of Western painting, which have rarely been exhibited in Portugal. This painting is from the Toledo Museum of Santa Cruz in Spain, and will be on exhibit at MNAA 14 September to 10 January 2016.

La Sagrada Familia con Santa Ana y San Juanito

The masterpiece by El Greco (Heraklion, Crete, 1541 – Toledo, 1614) is oil on canvas and measures 127 x 106 cm. With its Santa Ana, unveiling a nude sleeping boy, this work is one of the most emotional examples and compositionally more complex paintings by the El Greco. It is considered masterful in the combination of the devotional theme and private character.
