Madeira is known for its tropical splendor, temperate climate and relaxing island lifestyle. Many people also equate Madeira with its production of world-famous wine. And now, Madeira is home to one of Portugal’s newest boutique hotels—The Vine.
Located in the capital city of Funchal, not far from the town’s historic center, The Vine is an ideal get-away for those seeking simplicity, sophistication and relaxation. Named for the grape vines that permeate the island landscape, The Vine promotes itself as a “a hotel with soul, just like a good wine.”
For design aficionados, The Vine is a visual feast. Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill Levi and Madeira’s-own interior designer Nini Andrade Silva team up to create an environment that is a joy for the senses. The lobby is barron, but bold with illumination from the receptions desks. The Terra lounge is earthy and comfortable, yet urban and sophisticated. The rooftop pool terrace and Uva restuarant are works of contemporary art eclipsed only by the breath-taking panoramic views.
79 rooms and suites are spread across four floors; each floor themed for each of the four seasons. All rooms offer top modern conveniences, such as free wi-fi, high-speed data port, Egyptian cotton sheets, therapeutic pillows and 32” flat screen TV. Many rooms have deep tubs positioned to take in the spectacular views to the city or the sea.
On the roof terrace, Uva restaurant offers 360º views. This gourmet restaurant takes its name from the Portuguese word for grape. No doubt this is the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of Madeira wines. Here also, executive chef Thomas Faudry, under the supervision of three-star Michelin master Antoine Westermann prepares French haute cuisine using the best regional products.
Need a break from rooftop views? Step into A Divine Spa. This ultra modern retreat specializes in (what else?)…vinetherapy. Grape products, such as grapeseed oil and vine leaf extracts, are high in anti-oxidants. These elements are known to fight against free radicals and aid in the fight against ageing. A full menu of relaxing massage and body treatments are available.
