The prestigious São Mamede Gallery in Lisbon presents an extraordinary show, works from noted Portuguese modern painter António Charrua. The pieces in exhibition were part of a larger retrospective of the artist held in 2015 at the Museu Gulbenkian. Abstract and expressionistic works from six decades of Charrua’s career are included in the exhibition, which runs from 20 October through 15 November.

António Charrua was born in 1925 in Lisbon. Although he studied engineering at the Universidade de Ciências em 1944 and architecture at Universidade de Belas Artes em 1950, he became distracted from his courses when he discovered the works of Vincent Van Gogh and Picasso.

Charrua experimented with many artistic movements, often emulating aesthetics of some of his favorite artists, but always maintaining his own distinctive style.
