Tucked away behind ancient walls in the hamlet of Porches, locals have been savoring the delights of O Leão de Porches for many years. Under the watchful eye of the immensely conversant owner and leading lady Bianca Salden, diners are treated to warm hospitality, delightful dishes and an outstanding wine list.
The dishes lean towards fine dining; however, I was pleasantly surprised by the selection of skillfully imaginative healthier options on the menu. Fear not; lovers of the classics will be equally impressed with the meatier offerings on the Belgian owners’ menus. What will stand out here is the loyalty to fine Portuguese produce and the light culinary touch of Chef Marisa Alface.
Creative dishes are ever-present on both the five-course tasting menu at €60, along with the a la carte menu. The menus change seasonally, with eight tasting menus annually.
There are two lovely environments for your dining experience: on the tree-lined, whitewashed terrace; or, inside the charming 17th-century building with its cozy decor and original ceramics from Porches Pottery.
Whichever area you choose, what you can be sure of is a gastronomic delight with fabulous wines in a unique, historical setting.
