Sure, you can get a decent sandwich at any Padaria Portuguesa, but until 2024, Lisbon lacked a destination sandwich joint. That changed with the opening of A Bucha – The Sandwich Place in Campo de Ourique in 2024.
It’s the project of two young Portuguese friends who were passionate about food and cooking and wanted to open the kind of place they would go themselves: one where a high-quality sandwich could be quick and efficient, yes, but also tasty and healthy, built with top-level fresh ingredients from Portugal and abroad.
There are a few carpaccio boards, but the stars of the show are the sandwiches. There are just six on the menu, four with specialty meats (Finocchiona IGP salami, cured Bresaola Punta d’Anca Angus beef) imported from Italy, one with cured Portuguese mackerel and lemon, and a vegetarian option with tofu marinated in Asian sweet-and-sour sauce with creamy sriracha.
Equally important is the bread, a slow-fermented focaccia that’s satisfying but not bloating, and that keeps the sandwiches crunchy on the outside even with most ingredients in the filling. This makes them easy to transport—useful because the place has only four seats inside, but the pretty garden in Campo de Ourique is quite close by.
