100ml, the Portuguese company that developed the retro-cool Antiga Barbearia de Bairro (old barbershop in the neighborhood) shaving products for men, now turn their attention to the laundry room. Their new line of Aldeia da Roupa Branca (village of white linen) captures the essence of a time gone by in a new line of products for washing and freshening clothing and linens. It is a 21st century product built on traditions, memories and comforts of an earlier way of life.
100ml Co-Director Luís Pereira tells us the story of the traditional Portuguese laundry lady. “In the 1920’s, Portuguese village women shared the washing duties. Every Monday, laundry was collected house by house. Bundles of clothing and linens were strapped to a male-driven horse cart and delivered to the river. During the week, the women washed the clothes on rocks in the river using homemade lye soap. The wet clothes were then placed on stones, grass and bushes, or hung on a line to dry in the sun. It is here that the fabrics absorbed the natural fragrances of the pure fresh aromatic environment.”
Aldeia da Roupa Branca honors this memory with a line of products recalling the scents of those experiences. The fragrance is delicate and transparent, a harmony of floral roses and violet leaves, with a fruity nuance of cassis and a touch of elegant pink pepper. Citrus and woody notes recall the freshness of the breeze and the river.
This fragrance is key in products such as Ironing Mist Water (500ml for €15.80) and Perfume for Clothing (100ml for 13.80).
Soap made from pure coconut oil is available in two sizes: 250g for €3.90; and 500g for €6.90.
Sachets for your linen closet and clothing drawers make great gifts (see image on top). There are three scents: lavender, lime and peppermint. The herbs in embroidered raw cloth are priced at €9.90 each.
And to care for clothes while travelling, Aldeia da Roupa Branca has embroidered bags in different sizes to keep your clothes folded nicely, and to carry your jewelry and other fine items (€3.90-5.90).
