Step into the enchanting world of André Romão, a prominent Portuguese artist born in the 1980s, as he unveils his first solo exhibition at the Serralves Museum in Porto. The showcase titled “Calor” (“Warmth”) invites visitors to delve into a nocturnal landscape of dreamlike proportions, where the boundaries between human, animal, and vegetable blur, challenging societal norms and hierarchies. Calor runs through 2 June 2024.
Curated by Inês Grosso, chief curator of Serralves Museum, the exhibition unfolds across galleries 6 to 9, featuring a series of exclusively crafted new works that delve into Romão’s signature themes of hybridization, metamorphosis, and the interplay between the natural and artificial.
The artist uses his creations to critique contemporary society’s inclination to categorize and hierarchize species based on normative criteria. By depicting the blending and interaction of human, animal, and vegetable forms, Romão challenges viewers to question these ingrained practices. The exhibition becomes a platform for dismantling preconceived notions and pushing the boundaries of societal norms.
Recipient of the EDP Foundation New Artists Award in 2007, André Romão has since gained recognition through participation in significant exhibitions worldwide. His works have been featured in renowned institutions such as the Liverpool Biennale, MAAT (Lisbon), Berardo Museum (Lisbon), and more. Romão’s publications, including “Fauna” (2018), “Perspex, Marble, Bone” (2014), and “Barbarian Poems” (2012), showcase the depth and diversity of his artistic expression.
