The Baixa of Porto has an English pub! It’s the second location of Porto’s popular Bonaparte pub (now celebrating 30 years in Foz do Douro). The new Bonaparate Downtown, has all of the same ambiance, beer and “pub-ish-ness” of the original. Except now, the space on Praca Guilherme Gomes Fernandes is greatly convenient for city dwellers and tourists.
The British-style bar was actually established by German immigrant Klaus Teichgräber in 1977. Over the decades, guests have returned over and over for the large variety of lagers, whiskies and signature cocktails in an inviting, comfortable environment.
As with all pub décor, Bonapartes Downtown makes heavy use of wood in the furniture, bar and cabinetry. Every surface and wall space is covered with a tchotchke, trinket, photo or beverage advertisement. Pull up a stool at the bar, or take a seat in the back room. Traditional pub fare such as sirloin and pork sandwiches are served, as well as some Portuguese favorites like octopus, quid and chorizo.
