Coletivo 284, the cultural event space in Lisbon, showcases works by Catarina Diaz, an artist known for her romantic and dreamlike figurative style. Titled Diaz in Lisbon, organizers promise an immersive experience where attendees explore Diaz’s paintings, analog collages, and video pieces. The exhibition runs from 7 to 24 November.
Diaz’s multicultural background heavily influences her work. Born in Angola and later relocating to Portugal, her memories of vibrant African colors, natural beauty, and her family’s storytelling shape her artistic expression. Now based in London, Diaz is on an inner journey of discovering her relationship with the world and reflecting on her history and essence.
Drawing inspiration from portraiture, the artist composes analog collage pieces on paper wood or canvas, using oils, acrylics and mixed media. Golf leaf, antique gallery frames and other vibrant materials convey a rich, contrasting depth. According to the artist, each piece reflects elements of her inner journey, “my work thus represents my reflection on life, epiphanies, perceptions, acceptance of darkness, aspirations and the search for light and my fulfillment.”
Why this show, now, in Lisbon? “This, for me, is a transformational event. A recognition of my origins and who I am today,” explains Diaz. “It is particularly special for me to bring my original work to Lisbon. A return home, for a few days, which means immensely to me, in terms of expressing my artistic identity, in a more mature and authentic way.”
Diaz in Lisbon is part of IDENTIDADE, an annual collaboration between the event space and Galeria Pedro Jaime Vasconcelos Gallery.
