Exploring the wild Alentejo is just the beginning for Cavalos na Areia. This activities company rents bicycles (with special sand-friendly tires), horse riding and kayaks for half and full days for self-guided rambles around the Troia Peninsula, along the beaches, and up and down the waterways between the rice paddies.
But, Cavalos na Areia (Portuguese for “horses in the sand”) is the business’ name for a reason. Equestrian experiences are what the company does best. Cavalos na Areia offers horse riding lessons for children and other brand-new riders and some seriously beguiling guided rides for those who are already comfortable in the saddle. Instructor José Ribeira is skilled and patient, full of stories and friendly as can be.
The 90-minute route goes from the company’s (very professional) headquarters a few kilometers inland to the sea: over hills covered with gnarled cork tress, through neon-green rice fields, past the traditional Comporta cabana where fishermen live, and ultimately over the dunes and onto the Praia da Torre beach. There, if guests know what they’re doing, they’ll pick up the pace.
