Everyone loves visiting Tavira, in the eastern Algarve, for its quaint village charm, its centuries’ old history and its proximity to the sea. It’s an ideal destination to soak in the heritage of Portugal but at a slower, more relaxed pace. Complementing any visit to Tavira is a stay at Colégio Charm House. This charming boutique hotel, just a short five-minute walk from the Tavira historic city center, lives up to its name offering peaceful, artistically-appointed rooms and personalized service for guests seeking an elegant and serene get-away.
Originally, Colégio Charm House was a typical 18th-century manor house gifted by King Dom João V to his royal cook in appreciation for years of service. The house was passed down from generation-to-generation until the 1950’s when it was bought and used as a boys boarding school (a middle school, or “colégio” in Portuguese). After the local government abandoned the building, it fell into disrepair until it caught the eye of current owners Cristina and José Carlos. With their entrepreneurial spirit, combined with a love of collecting art and a flare for design, they transformed the boarding school into a delightful retreat. It is one of those spaces where everywhere you turn, there is an interesting object to study, consider and appreciate.
All rooms are the hotel are different in size and design, so making a decision on “room type” is a happy challenge. The Capela Suites (20m2) are two rooms in the manor house’s chapel, separate from the main building. Decorated in whites and golds, the chapel’s altar is incorporated into the design of the room.
The Patio da Vila Suites (20m2) each feature private outdoor space with wooden decks and a plunge pool. Take stairs up to the sleeping area separate from the relaxing living room.
The Premium Suites (25m2- pictured at top) are drenched in shades of white. They share a large terrace with orange trees and have direct access to the hotel’s main pool.
The Design Suites (20m2), perhaps, are the most exotic, painted in deep colors and featuring décor collected from the owners’ international travels.
The hotel has options for families too, with the Family Suite (40m2), Mezzanine Suite (35m2) and Royal Suite (50m2) accommodating sleeping for four.
The restaurant of Colégio Charm House is always open for hungry guests. In the evening, surprise degustation dinners, and themed or romantic dinners can be pre-arranged for celebrations or just to add a memorable experience to your stay.
Bored? It won’t be possible. Request a massage. Take a book to the rooftop terrace. Grab a signature cocktail at the bar. Play boardgames in the gallery. Or ask the front desk about local sight-seeing.
