Festival of Mãe Soberana, Loulé

Step into the heart of Loulé, where tradition and faith intertwine to create an unforgettable experience – the Festa da Mãe Soberana or Feast of the Sovereign Mother. This cherished event, steeped in history and spirituality, invites both locals and visitors to join in the celebration, promising a journey of cultural immersion and spiritual enrichment.

The grand celebration unfolds in two distinct moments, separated by 15 days of cultural activities.

Easter Sunday, 31 March

The Festa Pequena kicks off the activities.   The liturgical program begins in the Sanctuary, with the prayer of the Rosary, starting at 16:00.  Around 17:00, the “Image of Our Lady” (a revered statue) begins in procession, carried on shoulders by the Men of Andor, to the Church of S. Francisco.  It is there that the solemn Eucharist that closes the Festa Pequena takes place.

Cultural Delights

In the days leading up to the grand finale, a full schedule of cultural and spiritual events are scheduled. 

1 to 10 April – Liturgical program take place at the Church of São Francisco

1 April at 21:00 – Mãe Soberana Concert with Eduardo Ramos Trio

8 April at 21:00 – Noite de Fados à Mãe da Piedade, with Vítor Viola and Teresa

11 April at 21:00 – A procession takes place from Church of São Francisco to the Matriz (Main) Church. 

11-13 April – Liturgical programs take place at the Igreja Matriz. 

13 April at 21:00 – A “classic” of these celebrations, the horse pilgrimage of the Equestrian Club, pays homage to Nossa Senhora da Piedade

The Grand Finale, 14 April

The much-anticipated Festa Grande – a culmination of faith and festivity—takes place on 14 April.  Thousands of pilgrims gather for a morning Eucharist followed by a solemn procession to the Engº Duarte Pacheco Monument Lake.  Here, amidst the serene beauty of nature, an open-air mass and consecration to Our Lady take place at 16:00, evoking a sense of peace and reverence.  Around 17:00, the procession begins that will take the Image of the Patron Saint back to her Hermitage, punctuated by emotional moments such as the passage in front of the Town Hall, the Church of S. Francisco and the Convent of Santo António.  Along the route, the Men of Andor are accompanied by the music of the Artistas de Minerva Philharmonic Band.

Dating back to the 16th century, the Feast of the Sovereign Mother has evolved into a cherished cultural landmark and a beacon of religious tourism in Portugal.
