Lobo Mau Restaurante, Lisbon

Lobo Mau Lisbon

Lobo Mau takes its name (which means “bad wolf”) from the nickname of chef Hugo Guerra. Although he is, in fact, quite personable, he’s clear on what he wants from his kitchen: inventive, colorful, delicious food made with top-quality local ingredients.

Standout starters include vegetarian tacos with watercress mayonnaise, edible flowers and wasabi peas, and a salad of perfectly ripe organic tomatoes and plums. There are also fun options such as a shrimp hot dog with tartar sauce and fennel, and pork popcorn with chili mayonnaise.

The mains are likewise eclectic—get your international food dictionary handy—including creamy polenta with fried shrimp, chili filaments and homemade romesco (a thick sauce of red peppers, tomatoes, garlic, and toasted nuts); beef rib with grilled Chinese onion and salmorreta (sort of like a sofrito); and a vegetable mille-feuille with mango chutney.

The desserts are a bit more straightforward, and include salted caramel pie with banana and vanilla ice cream, and dulce de leche mousse with raspberry ice cream and caramel crumble.

Ask for a table in the back, near the gorgeous wallpaper and picture windows overlooking a garden.
