Between Art and Craft: “Manifesto” by João Bruno Videira at Cultural Center Cascais

From February 6 to April 19, 2026, the Cascais Cultural Center presents Manifesto, a new exhibition by Portuguese artist João Bruno Videira. This thoughtfully curated show invites visitors to slow down and engage with works that sit between art, design, and craft, offering a quietly powerful experience that feels both deeply rooted and unmistakably contemporary.

Videira’s practice is centered on textile manipulation, with wool as his primary medium. A traditional Portuguese material, wool is transformed here through bold color, sculptural volume, and a strong sense of form. The exhibition brings together textile sculptures, three-dimensional works, and installations that balance organic softness with geometric structure. Texture plays a leading role, encouraging a sensory encounter where material, color, and space are in constant dialogue.

Born in Tomar in 1973, Videira grew up surrounded by wool, influenced by his mother’s passion for traditional Arraiolos carpets. After studying Communication Sciences and working as a television journalist, he shifted toward art and design, where he found his true voice. His work has since gained international recognition, including presentations at London Design Fair and Dutch Design Week, celebrated for its distinctive blend of heritage and contemporary expression.

Curated by Filipa Belo, Manifesto reflects on the long-standing divide between art and craft. Rather than offering clear definitions, the exhibition opens a space for reflection—where manual labor is understood not only as skill, but as a form of thinking and decision-making. It’s an invitation to look again, and to reconsider the value of what has often been overlooked
