Housed inside a beautifully restored historic building dating back to the 18th century, the venue has lived many lives. Once serving as the Church of the Lagos Maritime Association, later a wine warehouse and eventually the headquarters of the Lagos Fire Brigade, the building stood silent for decades before entrepreneurs Luís Ledo and Célia Real transformed it into a celebration of Portuguese identity. Since opening in 2016, Mar d’Estórias has evolved into one of Lagos’ most distinctive cultural destinations.
The experience unfolds almost like a treasure hunt. Labyrinthine corridors lead visitors through thoughtfully curated spaces dedicated entirely to Portuguese products. The shop showcases beautifully crafted ceramics, home décor, jewellery, fragrances, clothing and accessories, alongside books celebrating Portuguese history, architecture and gastronomy. Every item has been carefully selected for its quality and authenticity, supporting Portuguese artisans, heritage brands and contemporary makers rather than imported imitations.
The adjoining Mercearia continues the journey with shelves stocked exclusively with Portuguese delicacies, including artisan preserves, olive oils, wines, sweets and regional liqueurs—the perfect edible souvenirs to take home.
Upstairs, the Bistro celebrates Portugal’s culinary traditions through fresh local ingredients, serving everything from Algarve shrimp and octopus salad to slow-cooked cod, roasted octopus and regional desserts.
