Mercearia Gomes – Gourmet Market in Comporta

merceria gomes comporta

In business for more than a century in Comporta, the family-owned Mercearia Gomes grocery store has morphed from a small village market into what some locals are now calling Little Harrod’s.  It is choc full of gourmet products from around the world, and delicacies you would never expect in any other small Portuguese fishing village.

Second-generation proprietor Carlos Gomes prides himself on sourcing whatever a customer wants, whether an Indian chutney or a Russian caviar. It might take a few days, but he’ll get it.

Beneath the baskets that hang from the ceiling, shelves are stuffed with fleur de sel, international spices, Moira Alves Reserva vinegar and Jamie Oliver’s range of bottle sauces. The wine section is full of premium champagnes and sparkling wines. And the freezers are stocked with scallops, lobsters and prawns. In Summer, fresh-caught fish is also available, along with regional specialties such as duck, partridge, and wild boar from Alcáçovas.

Mercearia Gomes also sells the baskets hanging overhead and other lifestyle products, like Mértola blankets, Dream Boots shoes, Castelbel soaps, Bordalo Pinheiro ceramics and hand-forged steel knives made by the artisan Paulo Tuna.
