Mira Mira, Porto’s second restaurant signed by chef Ricardo Costa offers a more relaxed, lighter approach to fine dining than the one where he made his name. If dinner at his Michelin two-star restaurant at the Yeatman is a once-in-a-lifetime event, a meal at Mira Mira is a more casual way to sample the chef’s imagination and talents.
The restaurant is part of the World of Wine complex, which combines several museums and restaurants in a complex amid the port wine warehouses of Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river from central Porto. As expected, it has a terrace with lovely views over the Dom Luis I bridge and the city’s historic riverside.
Diners have a choice of a la carte or tasting menus (omnivorous or vegetarian, four or eight courses), both of which emphasize simple dishes with relatively few ingredients. But “simple” often doesn’t mean “easy,” and Costa’s technique—honed over years in Michelin-star kitchens—shines through. Emblematic dishes include stingray with Iberian pancetta and chives, and “Alentejo style” pork with shellfish, coriander, and pickled onion.
Unsurprisingly given the setting, wine is also a focus. There are pairing options and selections by the bottle on the glass, with an emphasis on small Portuguese producers.
