MO House – A Guest House of Love in Porto

MO House Porto

Some of the best hotels begin as pure labor of love. That’s the case with MO House, the passion project of photographer Rita Olazabal. She rescued an old building on one of the city’s oldest and most characteristic streets and turned it into a MO House, a smart guesthouse that is an extension of her home.

It’s logical to think that MO might be initials. But no. It’s the pet name that she and her husband use: amo—“I love” shortened to Mo. Could there be clearer evidence that this is a labor of love.

Olazabal managed to pull off a renovation that made everything comfortable and safe but left a lot of the crumbling charm. Nothing is perfect. There are original, decaying doors and windows mixed in with the modern comforts in the public spaces and nine bedrooms. When the river-view rooms are bathed in sunlight, they feel all the more magical.
