From the outside, on the historic street of Rua das Janelas Verdes in Lisbon, the space looks like it could be an art gallery. Or, is it a gift shop? Still not sure? Step inside Mona Ideas Store and you decide for yourself.
Due to its location not far from the Museum of Art Antiga, Mona might be mistaken for a museum shop. Indeed, it could be considered the Lisbon version of the popular MOMA shops (a franchise of the Museum of Modern Art in New York). Design objects are for sale, as are creative gifts from around the world. Paintings from a temporary exhibition hang on the walls and are also available for purchase. It is a shop filled with ideas to satisfy the creative spirit in everyone.
The focal point of the shop is a unique large scale installation. The architectural sculpture made of thick corrugated cardboard is multi-functional. It hangs as a beautiful piece of contemporary art. It also lights up, providing illumination for the space. Yet ultimately, the horizontal elements act as display shelving for the many design objects for sale.
Merchandise in the store is quite diverse. Sure, a savvy shopper can pick up a t-shirt, pencil, or design book. But, why not consider a alarm clock on wheels, a photo album created to look like a giant cookie, or even a toilet paper dispenser in the shape of a Polaroid camera.
