Alcalar is an area rich in many types of funerary temples and tombs. A set of 18 tombs grouped into multiple cores and with a great architectural diversity are located between the northern estuary of Alvor and the foothills of the Serra de Monchique. Starting with the third century, many generations have used this region as a repository for their dead by using caves as collective tombs, excavated crypts and under stone monuments.
On site there is a Reception and Study Center with a permanent exhibition on these monuments. One of the tombs is open to the public. Many of the others are located on private property.
