Municipal Museum of Portimão

The Municipal Museum of Portimão is a newly renovated facility split into three distinct sections exploring interesting aspects of the city’s past.

The “Origin and Destiny of a Community” area takes advantage of the very structure housing the museum. Formerly a fish canning factory, the curators have given new life to the existing canning equipment, depicting what life may have been like working in this facility. All of the machines and work stations for washing, beheading, brining and canning have been restored and preserved as a unique exhibition.

The second area, “The Life and Industrial Challenge of the Sea” showcase materials and equipment used in marine exploration and industry.

“From the Depths” features Portimão’s pursuit of underwater archaeology. The estuary of the Arade River is one of Europe’s foremost marine archaeological sites. Among the items found and on display are artifacts and sunken ships from civilizations dating back over three millennia.
