O Jardim do Sr. Lisboa

o jardim sr lisboa

Although it’s decidedly not a vegetarian restaurant, O Jardim do Sr. Lisboa, opened in late summer 2022 is part of Lisbon’s new, and welcome, trend of vegetable-forward eateries. These places demonstrate an awareness that eating less meat is a good idea for a number of reasons, but also that vegetables—when prepared well—are simply delicious.

They’re prepared well here, by chef Pedro de Sousa, who is now splitting his time between O Jardim, which has a great location overlooking the Assembleia da República, and Sr. Lisboa’s original location in the theater district (now called A Cozinha do Sr. Lisboa). Here, in a garden esplanade and an exuberantly decorated dining room, he says, he’s celebrating the “more sexy side of vegetables” and giving Portuguese more reason to be proud of their local products.

In this restaurant, which is currently open for dinner, and weekend brunch, Sousa and his front-of-house colleague Francisco Breyner keep the tradition of the original location and give the small, shareable dishes playful, provocative names.

And so, Confronto do Mar ao Jardim (“confrontation from the sea to the garden”) is an excellent plate of Kombu flatbread with mussels, semi-dried ox heart tomatoes, and flowers from the garden, and Chora Agora! (“cry now,” exclamation point theirs) is a smoked beetroot tart with burnt butter emulsion. Straddling the line between savory and sweet, Até Parace que Estou de Férias (“until it seems like I’m on vacation”) combines melon, raspberries, lacto-fermented plums, and peppermint oil.

The beverage menu includes about 70% natural wines, artisanal beers, natural juices, and craft cocktails and mocktails dreamed up in consultation with noted bar wizard Constança Cordeiro (Toca da Raposa), and the brunch menu suggests cocktail pairings. There are plans to begin weekday lunch service soon too.
