Hotel Palacete Chafariz d’el Rei – A Grand Palace That’s Hip & Cool

Hotel Palacete Chafariz d’el Rei - Boutique hotels in Lisbon

Palacete Chafariz d’el Rei rests on a hillside in the old Alfama District. It is a restored grand palacete offering one of the most romantic and unique experiences in the city.  With only a few expansive suites, in a building of opulent salons and manicured gardens, you will feel as though you have the luxurious mansion to yourself.

The palacete was built in 1909 by João Antonio Santos, who had amassed great wealth in Brazil.  The unique architecture is neo-Moorish, with elaborate Brazilian art nouveau interiors.  Stained glass abounds, as do original tiles and moldings.  The building later housed an import/export business, and slowly lost its luster.  In recent years, the palacete was acquired by its current owners who had the vision of beauty, passion for detail……and deep pockets…to transform the palacete to the glorious “home hotel” it is today.

There are three suites to select from, each with their own unique character.  The Sonya Suite offers two queen beds and a lot of space for lounging.  With views to the narrow streets of the old district, this is the ideal room for the romance of old Lisboa.  Suite Lola offers a living room with views of the river, but a soak in the old-fashioned tub might be more appealing.  The Amaya Suite is rich in vintage detail and has the added feature of a terrace.

Don’t limit yourself to your suite, though.  Experience the grandeur of the common areas of the Palacete Chafariz d’el Rei.  The library, Salon of Mirrors, Salon Arabé and gardens are all wonderful places for conversation, enjoying a beverage or just relaxing.  The Salon Caça dining room has Brazilian wood marquetrie depicting the crest of Lisbon.  It is the perfect place to enjoy your continental breakfast.  (Keep in mind, there is no restaurant at the hotel. Yet, the Alfama has numerous quaint café’s for lunch and dinner.)

Palacete Chafariz d’el Rei is grand and old-fashioned, yet hip and modern.  More importantly, it is a very special experience.
