In a city with its share of palace hotels, Palácio Ludovice stands out for its genuine history, thoughtful design, well-done wine program, and prime location. The Lisbon hotel takes up an entire block at the crossroads of Chiado, Bairro Alto, and Principe Real.
The hotel occupies the former private residence of João Federico Ludovice, architect to King João V in the 18th century. The renovation, completed in 2022, preserved the original blue-and-white tiles, frescoes, and stucco ceilings while transforming them into 61 stylish, individually-designed accommodations.
Palácio Ludovice bills itself as a Wine Experience Hotel, a bit of branding that manifests itself with a glass of better-than-average port at check-in, an extensive wine list, five-course wine dinners, “sommelier’s choice” wine tastings, and a separate in-room wine menu with selections that change each month. At the sophisticated restaurant, Federico, the bar its nestled under the arched brick ceiling of an old wine vault.
Even the spa is connected to wine. It’s Lisbon’s first outpost of the French cult-favorite beauty line Caudalíe, whose products are based on the antioxidants and polyphenols found in grapes.
