As so many dreamy small hotels do, Pa.te.os began as a vacation property purchased with the idea of creating a country home and welcoming friends. But as owners Sofia and Miguel Charters fell more and more in love with the land they had bought near Melides, they decided they wanted to share it with the world.
And so they brought in noted Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus to design a compact collection of four vacation homes surrounded by the nature of the Alentejo. In keeping with the Arabic heritage of southern Portugal, they used the concept of patios (Pa.te.os—get it?), courtyards to maximize contact with nature.
The four houses, with one or two bedrooms each, can be rented individually, or the whole property can be booked as a seven-bedroom compound with a shared swimming pool to one side. Either way, the accommodations are simply but comfortably furnished, with an emphasis on natural materials and works from local artists, and they come with various niceties to ensure a comfortable stay.
Yoga teachers, massage therapists, and breathwork practitioners can come into guests’ wellness, and house cooks and private chefs look after their tastebuds. A full breakfast with fresh-squeezed juices, homemade granola, and organic vegetables from nearby farms is delivered each morning, and simple lunches and dinners can be arranged with advance notice.
