Paula Rego: Manifesto at Casa das Historias Paula Rego, through 6 October

Experience the evocative journey of Paula Rego’s artistic legacy at the Casa das Historias Paula Rego Museum in Cascais, where the exhibition, Paula Rego: Manifesto, invites you to delve into the artist’s profound reflections on Portugal’s tumultuous history and societal struggles. The exhibition runs from 18 April to 6 October.

Paula Rego: Mainfesto showcases Rego’s distinctive figurative style, which emerged during the 1960s and 1970s as a poignant response to the political turmoil of the time. Through a blend of experimental techniques and thematic exploration, Rego’s work becomes a manifesto of political resistance and social commentary.

At the heart of the exhibition lies Rego’s critical revisitation of pivotal moments in Portuguese history, from the authoritarian dictatorship to the post-revolutionary era. Her artwork challenges conventional narratives, offering a unique perspective on themes such as women’s rights and civic engagement.

A highlight of the exhibition is Rego’s portrayal of the April 25th Revolution of 1974, capturing both the euphoria of liberation and the disillusionment that followed. Through her lens, viewers witness the persistence of authoritarian symbols in democratic society and the ongoing struggle for true democracy.

Rego’s commitment to women’s rights is also palpable throughout the exhibition, as she confronts issues such as abortion and female genital mutilation with unflinching honesty. Her artwork serves as a catalyst for social change, sparking conversations and raising awareness about these critical issues.

As you explore Paula Rego: Manifesto, you’ll be immersed in a world of raw emotion, stark imagery, and thought-provoking narratives. Through her art, Rego reminds us that democracy is a continual work in progress, urging us to challenge the status quo and strive for a more just and equitable society.

Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with one of Portugal’s most influential artists and explore the power of art as a tool for social and political transformation.
