Do you know that über-famous French fashion designer Christian Louboutin (think high-end stilettos with shiny lacquered soles) has a thing for Portugal? Well, he does. He has a second home on the Alentejo coast (and, rumor has it, he is building a hotel there too). His “luso-mania” is also inspiring his creativity. Introducing the Portugaba handbags.

Portugaba, in white and black versions, is completely handcrafted, from its handles to its fringes. Each component uses a different traditional technique by skilled workers, often using no patterns, guides or machines. The bag features elements that represent Portuguese folklore and symbolism, from azulejos tiles (the lining on the inside) to the cape of honor (panels).

10% of profits will go to the Associaçao Portugal A Mao – Centro De Estudos E Promoçao Das Artes E Oficios Portugueses, upholding the protection and promotion of Portuguese craftsmanship.

The bags retail for €1659. It has immediately become a collector’s item.

Portugaba bags are sold at Neiman Marcus and through My Theresa.com.
