Suppose the idea of admiring some of the most beautiful and valuable jewels of the Portuguese Crown makes your eyes shine brighter. In that case, we’ve got the place for you.
Located in the west wing of the Ajuda National Palace – one of the most emblematic monuments in Lisbon, the Royal Treasury Museum (Museu Tesouro Real) is the new home for the Portuguese Crown jewels that, for the first time, have their own permanent address.
The exhibition, made up of several symbols of power and personal luxury objects from the Portuguese Crown, is located inside one of the largest safes in the world, divided by 3 floors and equipped with a sophisticated security system. Its size, quality, and rarity have already helped classify it as one of the most important collections of its kind in the world.
There are, in total, more than 1000 pieces, divided into 11 sections, each dedicated to a different theme associated with the Portuguese Crown. Jewels, coins, insignia, decorations, a gold nugget believed to be the second-largest in the world, and even a tobacco box ordered by King D. José from the King of France’s goldsmith in the 18th century, are all part of a fascinating journey through the history of the Portuguese monarchy.
The inauguration of the Royal Treasury Museum also marks the conclusion of the works on the Ajuda National Palace, which had been unfinished for 226 years.
