An hour east of Porto, in the heart of the Douro Valley, is a charming, cool, modern yet rural, boutique hotel: Quinta de São Bernardo. Positioned directly on the river, this delightful seven-room farmhouse and winery is ideal for short or long-term getaways.
Built in 1912, the farmhouse and surrounding vineyards have remained in the same family over the decades. In 2017, the property was renovated by grandson Diogo and wife Marcela. They kept close attention to creating comfortable and contemporary accommodations, while not forgetting the spirit of the functioning winery and farm.
Five of the rooms of the hotel have river views (two of those with enviable terraces). Two more rooms have partial views of the vineyards.
Common areas include a farm-to-table restaurant, where a set menu is prepared nightly. It is also here where a breakfast of fresh breads, fruits, sliced meats and locally-produced honey is impeccably presented. An outside terrace overlooking the river is perfect for afternoon lemonade or pre-dinner drinks. Deck chairs around the infinity pool enable sunbathers to enjoy the mountain vistas and the boats cruising down the Douro. In the evening a family room offers warmth from the fireplace and games for entertainment.
